Preparing for your move

What are the most important qualities to look for in a moving company?

A reputable moving company will provide you a quote in writing, and take the time to explain every aspect of your move.  Your moving consultant should be knowledgeable.  A reputable moving company should be able to offer you moving services, storage, packing, unpacking and crating services.

How far in advance should I schedule my move?

You should book your move at least 2-3 weeks before your moving day to ensure that all arrangements can be made and the schedule is more flexible.  We can accommodate your moving day at the last minute as well.  As soon as you have determined your moving date, call or email us to book  your move.

What day/date is best to move?

Kingsway Van Lines can accommodate your moving any day.  However, it is recommended to move during week days as most neighbours and other tenants are at work, and this allows for less interruption for the moving crew.

Do you pack and/or supply materials and boxes?

Kingsway Van Lines provides full and partial packing services as well as packing materials for sale.  Consult with your sales representative who will guide you through your needs and explain the packing options available.

How long does it take to move?

Many factors affect the length of time it takes for a shipment to travel from origin to destination, including distance, weight of the shipment, Customs, weather, road conditions and/or ferry crossings. Please allow for extra time and be flexible when planning your move.

Do you have storage facilities?

Kingsway Van Lines has several options for your storage needs.  Whether you are looking for storage while you get occupancy of your home or just require storage needs, Kingsway Van Lines can accommodate your needs.  We offer a wide variety of storage needs across North America.

Do you ship vehicles?

Kingsway Van Lines has many affiliates throughout the country.  We can provide you with a quote for your vehicle shipping needs across North America.  The vehicles are handled by a third party.  However, as your mover we are usually able to provide you with a much better quote than the general public.

Financial Aspect

How much will my move cost?

The moving cost is calculated based on the origin and final destination of your shipment.  Local moves are based on an hourly rate, and long distance moves are based on the weight of the shipment.  Your moving consultant will gather as much information as possible in order to provide you with the most accurate quote based on your moving needs, this includes requirements for moving, storage and/or packing service.

Are there any hidden fees or extra charges?

Kingsway Van Lines does not have any extra fees or hidden charges.  When you book your move with Kingsway Van Lines our sales consultants will send you a written confirmation/agreement outlining all the charges and confirming the agreed upon rates, to ensure that you are aware of any possible charges during your move and in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

What method of payment do you accept?

Payment for the move is due upon delivery destination before the movers offload the moving van.  Kingsway Van Lines accepts bank draft, money order, certified cheque or cash at the time of delivery.  We can also accept Visa or MasterCard.

Does my estimate include insurance against loss or damage while my goods are in transit?

The Federal Government stipulates that at no extra charge, all moving companies must provide basic compensation for damage or loss, which is called Released Rate Liability. This coverage is limited and will only cover your goods at 60 cents per pound per article.  That is if you have a damaged 100 lbs table, you would have a coverage of $60 should the item be damaged or lost during transportation.

Can I purchase additional protection coverage?

Kingsway Van Lines provides extra coverage to its moving clients.  Speak with your sales consultant who will be happy to explain extra coverage with you and explain how it works.  We also encourage you to speak with your own personal insurance provider, as you may be already covered and wont need to purchase extra coverage.

Moving your household goods.

Will my furnishings remain clean?

Your furniture will be wrapped in clean, quilted moving pads for extra protection. All upholstered items such as sofas and chairs will be wrapped in plastic for extra protection before the quilted pads are put on for a nominal charge.

Can I pack some items myself?

Yes you can pack yourself.  Mover’s liability on self-packed boxes and items however is limited.  Speak with one of our sales consultants on the packing options available to you to ensure that all of your pricy items are properly packed and covered.

Can I pack clothing in a chest or dresser drawers?

For safe transportation the contents of drawers, chests, dressers, trunks etc., should be packed into cartons and all drawers should be emptied before the moving crew arrives.

Do the movers remove curtain rods and paintings from the walls?

Your pack crew will bring special cartons to protect your painting and wall hangings. Kingsway Van Lines, however, do not remove any items that are secured to your walls, including paintings, curtain rods and shelving. It is your responsibility to remove any fixed items from the walls for the moving crew. 

Do I need to empty out my filing cabinets?

For safe transportation the contents within filling cabinets should be packed into cartons and drawers should be emptied.

Will you disassemble and reassemble furniture?

Your packing crew will disassemble basic items at the time of the pickup.  Assembly at delivery is not included with the price and can be arrange through your moving consultant at a nominal charge. 

Do you bring pads to protect the furniture?

Any items that are not packed into cartons will be wrapped in quilted furniture pads to ensure that they are protected. The moving pads arrive with the moving crew for the moving day.  The moving crew will perform all of the wrapping in preparation for the move.

Do you have a weight restriction?

There are no minimum or maximum weight restrictions on any items that Kingsway Van Lines will transport for you. 

Will you move my plants?

Your plants can be moved. However, we do not accept liability for any plants that are being moved.

Will you move my pets?

Kingsway Van Lines will not transport your pets in our moving vans or trucks.  We recommend that you make other arrangements for your pets. 

Are there any items I can't move?

Yes. As a matter of public safety, the government restricts the transportation of dangerous goods. Some dangerous goods may be included in your shipment under controlled conditions, while the law prohibits the transport of others. In either case, you must disclose to the Driver every item you intend to include with your shipment that poses a hazard. Some prohibited items include: gasoline, propane tanks, oxygen tanks, fire extinguishers, ammunition, and some cleaning supplies. 

When should I contact you if I need to re-schedule my move?

If for some reason you need to re-schedule your move please contact your Kingsway Van Lines moving consultant as soon as you know that you need to change your moving date.  In most cases we can accommodate a change of moving day at your request.

Do my appliances require special servicing?

Most appliances and mechanical equipment need to be prepared by a licensed professional before being moved. It is important to remember that appliances or mechanical equipment not serviced by a professional travel at the owner’s risk for internal damage. It is your responsibility to clean out the fridge and stove prior to servicing and to ensure all appliances are completely emptied. 

When will the movers arrive on moving day?

Kingsway Van Lines dispatcher will contact you the day before your moving day to confirm the pick up time slot and confirm any last minute moving details.  We recommend that you don’t make travel arrangements or appointments on your moving day to ensure that in the case of any delays you don’t miss any scheduled events.

Do I have to be present for all phases of the move?

Kingsway Van Lines recommends that you be present for both the pick up and the delivery portion of the move.  However, if you are not able to be there physically, we recommend having someone there that is familiar with the shipment and can direct the moving crew on moving day.

How does Kingsway Van Lines keep track of my inventory during transportation?

All items in your home will be inventoried on load day. Each item is numbered and a brief description of the condition of the item is listed on an inventory of articles shipped. On the moving day you will receive a copy of the inventory list, to allow accurate checking off each item as it is being delivered at destination point.

What can I expect on delivery?

Upon arrival at destination, the delivery crew will ask for the payment of the move in full as Kingsway Van Lines operates only on COD (collect at delivery) terms.  The driver will provide you a moving receipt which will confirm the amount paid and the method of payment.  The driver will also be offloading the shipment and will ensure that each item is checked off. 

Will the movers place my furniture where I want it in my new home?

When your goods are delivered, they will be placed in the appropriate rooms of the home so that they are readily available for the owner’s use. 

What should I do if something is damaged or lost during my move?

Kingsway Van Lines will take every measure to ensure that there are no damages during the transportation of your goods from origin to destination.  In an even of damage during transportation, we ask that you take note, and contact Kingsway Van lines to obtain a claim form to submit.  We ask that you submit your claim in writing within 10 days of delivery date.
